STEP by STEP: Real Stories of Energy Efficiency in Action  by Miguel Vargas

With the support of our community, CPS Energy’s Sustainable Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP) has helped families, schools, non-profits, and businesses across the community save energy and money, while contributing to a future with lower carbon emissions. Approved in August 2022, STEP is now in year 3 of a 5-year plan and continues to deliver real value and savings where they matter most.   

In the most recent three-year cycle (August 2022 to July 2025), STEP has: 

• Invested $205 million in our local community 
• Served more than 140,000 customers  
• Reduced energy demand by 280 megawatts—enough to power 70,000 homes on a hot summer day 
• Avoided 850,000 tons of carbon emissions—equal to taking 180,000 cars off our local roadways 
• Weatherized over 6,500 homes to be more energy efficient and save on bills  
• Launched the new pilot program, Multifamily Program, to bring energy savings and enhanced comfort to customers who live in apartments 

The STEP program is more than statistics; it is an initiative adopted by our local community interested in making change.
